Education is key
PBRSD is proud to provide consultations to Pit Bull owners in San Diego County who want to know more about the breed in general, or their dog specifically. We conduct workshops for schools, local shelters, and any organization, individual or group who would like to know more about the wonderful breed that we know and love.
We focus on the history of the breed, breed myths, ownership challenges, selecting a temperamentally sound Pit Bull and more. To date we have helped many owners live more successfully with their dogs just by knowing more about them. We have given lectures and presentations at local middle schools and local Humane Societies.
We provide accurate information about the breed to the general public through our community outreach and education, and through the information we have on our site. Education is a large part of PBRSD, as it is only through education that the general public will come to better understand and accept the wonderful dog that is the Pit Bull.
We are present at as many San Diego County events as we can get to! We come armed with informational materials including spay/neuter information, breed information, dog fighting information and more. Our dedicated groups of volunteers are always on hand to answer questions, and we usually have a Pittie or two in tow!
Why Pit Bulls?
It seems as if every day there is something in the media about Pit Bulls, and it is never pleasant. They are portrayed as the most vicious breed in society. This is neither true nor accurate. Once again, the media finds a focus and runs out of control with it.... and some people subscribed to it.... people whose only contact with a Pit Bull was through a newspaper or a television.
A beautiful yet harrowing video has been brought to the attention of the Pit Bull community. It sends across a vital message, and forces us to ask 'who is the real monster?' Warning - graphic images. Courtesy of the author - Luiza Mendoza.
The Truth
Anyone who has ever owned a Pit Bull, or been around one for a period of time will tell you what a wonderful breed they are - loyal, loving, goofy and enthusiastic. Many types of breed have been subject to media sensationalism, including the Saint Bernard. But no breed has ever suffered persecution like the Pit Bull. At one time in America they were known as the 'Nanny Dog' due to their incredible patience with and love for children.....
Temperament
Canines as a species have a tendency to be competitive, and in Pit Bulls this was actively encouraged, as they were used in the 'sport' of dog fighting. However, animal aggression and human aggression are entirely different things. Pit Bulls had human aggression actively bred out of them, as they had to be handled safely by their owners in the ring. Any Pit Bull that bit a human was killed. They were bred very carefully to maintain this trait.....
Today
During the mid-1980s, money-grubbing and nefarious types saw a market for the breed, and started breeding them indiscriminately, paying no attention to preserving the genetic traits that made them wonderful, even selecting them for aggression. Temperament is a mixture of genetics and upbringing. If a dog is raised responsibly, even if they have a tendency towards animal aggression, the dog will be a well-adjusted and loving companion. Some owners fail to properly socialize their dogs and then wonder why Buster chomped on next door's dog.
Be a responsible owner - those of us who love the breed end up fighting against the image that the general population has of Pit Bulls because of those handful of neglectful owners who did not take the time to properly train and socialize their dog.
